Questions

Common questions

Free safety facts, no purchase needed: carbon monoxide, cold, heat and who to call

You do not need to buy anything to read this. It is the same guidance the book gives in Entries 35, 50 and 55 and Appendix C, from the agencies named.

Carbon monoxide. You cannot see or smell it, and a sleeping person can die before having any symptom (CDC). Never sleep with the engine running. Never use a fuel-burning heater, grill, camp stove, charcoal or generator where people sleep; a cracked window does not make it safe (CDC, CPSC). Keep a battery carbon monoxide alarm switched on and tested. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. If an alarm sounds or anyone has symptoms: get everyone out into fresh air first, then call 911, and do not go back in.

Cold. Hypothermia can happen even above 40 °F when you are chilled by rain, sweat or cold water (CDC). Warning signs in adults: shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, drowsiness. In babies: bright red, cold skin and very low energy. Someone who was shivering and has gone quiet, sleepy and clumsy is getting worse. Call 911 right away (National Institute on Aging). Change out of wet clothes before you sleep.

Heat. Heat stroke is a medical emergency: a body temperature of 103 °F or higher, hot red skin that is dry or damp, a fast strong pulse, headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion or passing out. Call 911, move the person somewhere cooler, cool them with cool cloths, and give them nothing to drink (CDC). Never leave a child, a disabled person or a pet in a parked vehicle, even in winter (National Weather Service).

Who to call. 911 for danger to life now. 988, call or text, for a suicidal, mental health or substance use crisis, 24 hours a day. 211, call or text, or 211.org, for local shelter, safe parking, food, and warming or cooling centers. Poison Help: 1-800-222-1222. National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233.

Sources: CDC, CPSC, National Institute on Aging, National Weather Service, 988lifeline.org, 211.org, poisonhelp.hrsa.gov and thehotline.org, all read 16 September 2026. Numbers and guidance can change. This is general safety information, not medical advice.

Is this a printed book you mail to me?

No. Nothing ships. It is a PDF and an EPUB you download as soon as you pay, and you keep both files. Print any page at home if you want it on paper.

Is this only for people who have lost their home?

No. It is written for anyone living in a car, van, truck or RV, by choice or by budget, and for anyone planning ahead in case they need to. It is plain and practical, and it assumes nothing about how you got there.

Will the parking rules be right for my town?

The book explains how federal, state, city and lot-owner rules stack, and shows you how to find and read your own local ordinance. Every legal rule names its source and the date it was read. Laws change and cities add their own, so check the current local rule before relying on one. It does not teach hiding from police or parking where you are not allowed.

What if it is not what I hoped?

Who wrote it

Who wrote it

CarVanRVHandbook.com is the name this book is published under, and no personal story or credential is claimed for it. What stands behind the book is its sourcing. Every law, safety rule and program names where it comes from, usually a government agency, a manufacturer's manual or the text of the law, and the date it was read. Where a state rule could not be confirmed from its official text, the book says so instead of guessing. It covers the subjects of the YouTube channel below, written as a plain reference.
